Record-breaking mapping transforms Tokyo building into dynamic canvas

Take a moment to stand in front of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building and experience a world-record in the making! The latest tourist attraction in Tokyo’s West Shinjuku district is officially the largest permanent exhibition of projection mapping on a building. This mapping feat is brought to life by 40 high-brightness Pansonic laser projectors covering a massive 14,000 m² display area. Behind the scenes, WATCHOUT software and WATCHPAX media servers play a key role, delivering seamless, high-quality, 3D content.

Inaugurated in February 2024, the record-breaking installation in Tokyo is the ultimate showcase for modern projection-mapping technology. In addition to the outstanding quality of both content and projection, the entire system can be managed from a central location for smooth operation and maintenance. Projectors are in specially designed housings that are earthquake-proof, waterproof and dust-proof, guaranteeing consistent performance even in challenging outdoor conditions!

The projection mapping is made possible through collaboration with Panasonic’s “AcroSign” signage system. Dataton’s WATCHOUT show composer software, running on WATCHPAX 62 media servers, is used to playback the synchronized content to the 40 projectors. With five sets of servers providing 40 outputs via optical fiber, and an additional backup unit, the system ensures reliable operation and high-quality visual output.

The show’s content was created by a multi-talented group of artists working with 3D-models based on the building's actual architectural data. There are usually two screenings per hour, and, moving forward, more content will be added. The aim is to offer dynamic and engaging visuals for all spectators.
